The worsening recession means more people trying to earn money by lining up to drive taxis in New York City where fewer people are using them. That means cab companies send more prospective drivers home without cabs every shift telling them to try again the next day. Taxi cab driver licenses have hit an all-time high of 45,805 with a 19 percent increase in the number of new hack licenses issued during the first three months of the year. Traditionally, New Yorkers have turned to driving cabs when they find themselves unemployed. But now too many people are trying the same thing and it is only likely to grow worse as the nation’s recession has not hit bottom yet.
