“This is a story of heroes – something out of a movie script. But if it was a movie people probably wouldn’t believe it. It is too good to be true.” – Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York.

The pilot of an Airbus A320 (US Airways Flight 1549), had to make a crash-landing on the Hudson River in New York after hitting a flock of birds that knocked out both plane engines. A ceremony to reward those involved in the rescue, including police officers and ferry workers was held with a golden key to the city awaiting pilot Chesley Sullenberger, 57, of Danville, California, a former Air Force fighter pilot who has flown for US Airways for 29 years.

Former Airbus executive George Hamlin said the pilot deserves a big thank you from the city. “Ditching an aircraft is a significant accomplishment on the part of the pilot, instead of crashing one”. “There’s no place for an airplane of that size to land in Manhattan.”
